The National Library Board of Singapore (NLB) is introducing Snap Spectacles, AR glasses powered by Snap AR, to offer readers a unique augmented reading experience.

The AR reading experience adds an auditory dimension by playing ambient music and sound effects in real time, creating an immersive atmosphere that draws readers deeper into the story. It works by scanning the book as the reader progresses, using text recognition and machine learning to trigger audio and visual augmentations—like background music, the creak of a door, or a distant click—along with visual elements that enhance the plot. Readers can also share what they see, including the virtual items overlaid by the AR glasses.

Stephan Schwarz, Executive Creative Director at LePub Singapore, explains: "Our goal is not to replace the traditional reading experience, but to enhance it by creating engaging reading experiences. These glasses are designed to invite people to rediscover the joy of deep, meaningful interaction with words. Once people are hooked on the story, we hope they will read all the way to the end."

To create this experience, LeGarage, LePub's innovation hub, has worked closely with the innovation team at Snap's AR studio in Paris, from concept to development.

Snap Spectacles with the augmented reading feature will soon be available for public trials at selected libraries in Singapore, with more details to be announced when ready. At the same time, the augmented reading prototype for Snap Spectacles will also be made available to the developer community through Spectacles' Lens Explorer.
