Google Labs has launched Doppl, a smartphone app available for Android and iOS devices that allows users to virtually try on clothing. Leveraging AI technology, the app can replace the clothing of a person in a photo with garments selected by the user.

Doppl primarily takes a user's photo as input. While the specific algorithm has not been disclosed, the AI uses this photo to understand the user's body type and determine whether they are slim or plus-sized. Next, the user uploads photos of the clothing they want to virtually try on. The AI also identifies the type of fabric used through these images. Using undisclosed methods, the AI calculates how the clothing drapes and fits on the user's body—including curved areas—before generating photos and dynamic videos, allowing users to intuitively see how the garments would look when worn in real life.

The app's advantage lies in reducing the time and effort wasted on purchasing and returning clothing that is ill-fitting or unsuitable. This experimental application, Doppl, is available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, and is currently limited to users aged 18 and above in the United States.
