Snapchat recently announced a new partnership with the UK's Channel 5, integrating its augmented reality (AR) technology into a new program that explores the development of the world's ancient wonders.

As illustrated in the example, this collaboration will present Snapchat's AR experiences to TV viewers via on-screen QR codes. When viewers scan the QR code, they can launch an AR interactive scene through the Snap Camera on their mobile phones, thereby gaining more background information about the wonders discussed in the program.

A Snap Inc. representative explained: "This series, airing on Channel 5 in the UK, follows historian Bettany Hughes OBE across three continents in search of the Seven Wonders of the World. She will travel to ancient sites in Greece, Egypt, and Turkey to take a closer look at this 2,200-year-old 'bucket list'. Viewers simply need to scan the QR code on the screen with their phones to virtually travel through time and space to explore, learn about, and view these sites—from venturing to the Old Kingdom of Egypt to explore the Great Pyramid of Giza, to admiring the beautiful Hanging Gardens of Babylon. People will be able to explore these amazing ancient sites in augmented reality."

This is an interesting experiment that directly links AR interactive experiences with a TV series. It has the potential to enhance public awareness of AR’s educational capabilities and increase interest in Snapchat’s AR tools.

With AR glasses from Snap and other companies on the horizon, this collaboration could serve as a valuable entry point for broader audiences who traditionally may not be Snap’s target users. Snapchat’s user base skews young and does not overlap with the core audience of this TV show. However, through this new partnership, more TV viewers may eventually try Snap’s advanced AR features, paving the way for wider AR adoption and resonance.
