The unique ability of 3D Gaussian Splatting to present high-fidelity spatial content through an efficient rendering method has attracted widespread attention in the fields of geospatial, graphics, and standards.

Given the transformative potential of 3D Gaussian Splatting, the Khronos Group, Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), Niantic Spatial, Cesium (Bentley), and Esri have joined forces to integrate 3D Geospatial Gaussian Splats into Khronos' widely adopted "glTF" 3D asset format standard. This collaborative initiative aims to establish a standardized and interoperable framework for encoding and sharing 3D Gaussian rendering effects, ensuring broad interoperability and ease of implementation across different platforms and applications.

The core of this initiative lies in the adoption of the SPZ format—an open-source file format provided by Niantic Spatial under the MIT License. Compared with the PLY format, SPZ can compress 3D Gaussian splatting by up to 90% while maintaining visual fidelity and performance. The simplicity and efficiency of SPZ make it highly suitable for widespread adoption, as it strikes a balance between computational performance and high-quality visualization.

Combining the advantages of SPZ with the flexible structure of glTF will result in a compatible and intuitive implementation solution. In the future, additional data fields can be added to support diverse user needs and customized workflows.

The Khronos 3D Format Working Group is developing two new extensions, "KHR_gaussian_splatting" and "KHR_gaussian_splatting_compression_spz," which aim to standardize the transmission of Gaussian splatting in glTF assets. These extensions will provide a scalable, high-performance foundation layer for high-fidelity spatial rendering and enable the development of more complex features as the technology matures.
