Meta CTO: The delayed "Augments" feature for Quest 3 needs to be rebuilt from scratch

Meta's Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth has revealed the current development status of "Augments"—a long-delayed feature for the Quest 3.

Meta's Horizon OS supports opening and running multiple 2D windowed apps simultaneously on the Quest 3, but currently only one MR (Mixed Reality) app can run at a time, and it cannot operate alongside virtual world environments. This stands in stark contrast to Apple's visionOS, which, through its "Shared Space" architecture and RealityKit framework, allows both windowed apps and volumetric apps to run concurrently, with the background optionally set to passthrough mode or a virtual environment.

Mark Zuckerberg once described Augments as "persistent spatially anchored digital objects" that can operate in parallel with other objects in physical space. Footage from early 2024 showed that Augments could even include interactive elements, such as playable mini pinball games, interactive calendars, and waterable virtual plants. However, the feature has yet to be rolled out to all users, and Andrew Bosworth has stated that it needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

More than a year later, Bosworth responded again to questions about Augments' progress: "When we announced the project at Connect a few years ago, we had programs, frameworks, and were in the middle of development. But when we finally got the result, it just wasn't good enough. It had too many unacceptable performance issues, and we realized that the entire system architecture supporting it was fundamentally flawed. We've spent years going back to the design phase and rebuilding the whole system from the ground up."

While the response is relatively vague, it at least confirms that the feature has not been canceled. Meta Connect 2025 is scheduled for September 17, which is less than a month away, and specific updates on Augments for Meta Horizon OS are likely to be announced there.
